Many women will experience pain during intercourse at some time in their lives, if the pain during sex is a recurring problem you could be suffering from dyspareunia, a term used for painful sexual intercourse due to medical or psychological causes.
Defined as “persistent or recurrent genital pain that occurs just before, during or after intercourse”, symptoms could include:
1. Pain only at sexual penetration
2. Pain with every penetration, even while putting in a tampon
3. New pain after previously pain-free intercourse
4. Deep pain during thrusting
5. Burning pain or aching pain
6. Throbbing pain, lasting hours after intercourse
The causes of dyspareunia can be different for many women, it can be caused by physical or emotional factors, or from injury, trauma, irritation, skin disorders(eczema or vaginismus), and involuntary spasms of the vaginal wall muscles. Psychological problems like depression, stress and previous sexual abuse can also cause the sexual pain.
