Russian TV has broadcast sharp criticism of the Western focus on sexual harassment, and some of the critics show little or no sympathy for the women involved. “What did they expect?”, asked Dmitry Kiselyov, a major player in the Kremlin’s media machine and Sunday news show host, “They went up to a man’s hotel room on their own, without compulsion.”

Matt Lauer, the co-host of NBC’s “Today,” once gave a colleague a sex toy as a present that included an explicit note about how he wanted to use it on her, which left her mortified.

He summoned a different female employee to his office, dropped his pants and showed her his penis. After she declined to do anything he reprimanded her for not engaging in a sexual act.

He would sometimes quiz female producers about who they’d slept with and trade names, and he loved to engage in a crass quiz game with men and women in the office: “f—, marry, or kill,” in which he would identify the female co-hosts that he’d most like to sleep with.
